What is the NGO Forum?

The NGO Forum is a voluntary, independent body of national and international NGOs that serves and facilitates the work of its members to address the humanitarian and development needs in South Sudan. The NGO Forum members work in South Sudan to save lives and improve lives.

What is the difference between the South Sudan NGO Forum and the NGO Forum Secretariat?

The NGO Forum is the body of national and international NGOs that serves and facilitates the work of its members to address the humanitarian and development needs in South Sudan.

NGO Forum Secretariat assists the NGO Forum Steering Committees in the fulfilment of their functions as entrusted to it by the NGO Forum members. The NGO Secretariat function is ‘hosted’ by a member NGO which provides for the operational needs of the NGO Secretariat.

What are the rights/duties of a member of the South Sudan NGO Forum?

  • Take an active part in the Forum architecture.
  • Recognize other NGOs’ sensitivity and confidentiality.
  • Attend meetings / working groups as applicable (to include AGMs, Country Director meetings, security meetings, specific working groups etc)
  • Contribute to information requests by Secretariat Information Manager (to include contact details, field locations etc).
  • Share information in order to enhance situational awareness, operational decision making and improve general safety and security.
  • Each member has one vote in the NGO Forum meeti

How does the Forum work?

The NGO Forum provides a platform on which NGOs, the Government of the Republic of South Sudan (GRSS), the UN, donors, and other external stakeholders can exchange information, share expertise and establish guidelines for a more networked, efficient and effective use of aid resources in South Sudan. The Secretariat primarily focuses on information sharing, advocacy for NGOs, networking, representation and communication around safety and wellbeing.

Who are the Steering Committee?

The NGO Forum has two Steering Committees – INGOs SC and NNGOs – each comprising of 10 members elected annually. The elected representatives of the INGO SC and NNGO SC constitute a Joint Steering Committee.

The role of the Steering Committees is to provide leadership at the level of strategy and policy, by ensuring principled organisational buy-in, commitment from member agencies, external influence and oversight of the Secretariat Director.

What is the NGO Forum Statutes of Operations?

The South Sudan NGO Forum has Statutes of Operations which govern the Forum. The statutes defines  and describes the  structure and operations of the Forum.

The Statues were updated in January 2019 and endorsed by members of the International NGOs and National NGOs. The statutes were subsequently signed by the Chairs of the INGOs and NNGOs Steering Commitees.
